2010 Honda Insight (Weekly Test-Drive)

We returned to the 2010 Insight back to Honda earlier this morning, so we figure it’s time to take a look at its competitors before we give you a full review sometime next week.

2010 Honda Insight:

  • Base Price: $19,800.
  • Power: 1.3L 4-cylinder i-VTEC / 10kw electric-motor – 98-hp / 123 lb-ft of torque.
  • Fuel-economy: 40/43 mpg (city/highway).

2010 Toyota Prius:

  • Base Price: $22,400.
  • Power: 1.8L 4-cylinder VVT-i / 60kW electric-motor – 98-hp / 105 lb-ft of torque.
  • Fuel-economy: 51/48 mpg (city/highway).

2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid:

  • Base Price:
  • Power: 2.5L Atkinson-Cycle I-4 / net output equals 191-hp / 136 lb-ft torque.
  • Fuel-economy: 41/36 mpg (city/highway).

    No tdi competition? I would think Jetta/Golf TDI's would hold up quite well against the hybrids…

    A TDI would have been a worthy competitor. However, consumers looking to buy a hybrid won't consider a diesel as an alternative (at least here in America). Overseas, the opposite is true. An oil burner trumps any hybrid (at least for now)..

    It is all have to do with convenience. I am not comfortable driving a diesel to unknown towns/cities since I know not every gas station has diesel (there could be a diesel station a block back but I would not have known it). For example, there are 5 gas stations within a mile from my house but to get diesel, I would have to drive another 2 miles off of the main route).

    While that is true. the TDIs don't really compete with the Prius or Insight. Nonetheless they are pretty good options for someone looking for a fuel-efficient vehicle.
