Known for its diesel lineup in the U.S., Volkswagen will be stepping up the “green” game in 2011. According to Volkswagen Group of America CEO Stefan Jacoby, when the next-generation Beetle come to the United States as a 2012 model, it will eventually get a diesel engine option. The U.S. is also scheduled to get an electric-vehicle based on the Volkswagen Up! hatchback in 2014 – however, a gasoline-powered version will not be offered.

At the 2009 LA Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled a diesel/electric concept called the Up! Lite. The production version of the car will be built in Germany and will go on sale in Europe before other markets.

“This is a study to find out whether customers have an interest in very low fuel consumption,” said Ulrich Hackenberg, head of technical development. “For American customers, it’s very important to present themselves as green.”
