If you thought Ford had the market cornered on the fuel-efficient-turbo-direct-injection thing, Hyundai’s got some news for you. The 2011 Hyundai Sonata breaks cover (officially at least) sporting a 2.4 GDI turbo-4 with 198-hp (200-hp for the SE) and 184lb-ft of torque. Not bad, not bad at all. Where things start getting magical is the fuel economy numbers of 23/35. This exceeds every other midsize car on the market, both in power, torque and fuel economy.
In fact, not only does it best all of those midsizers, it’s actually a large car by EPA interior numbers. It isn’t the only one, however as the Accord is also classified as a large car as was the previous Hyundai Sonata. However, with the swoopy styling, one might have expected it to drop considerably.
Hyundai will be following up with a 2.0L GDI turbo-four as well as a hybrid 2.4L four-cylinder which will debut at the 2010 NY Auto Show.
