Toyota MR2

At the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, Honda showed the second iteration of its CR-Z hybrid coupe concept, of which a production model will debut at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show in January. Ever since, there have been rumors of Toyota planning a competitor to the CR-Z with plans of extending the company’s Prius brand.

According to a report by BestCar, Toyota is considering reviving the MR2 as a hybrid model to compete with the CR-Z. Technical details are currently unavailable but the Japanese magazine says that the model could be badged the MR-S. Powertrain is likely to be shared with the current Prius, which is powered by a 134-hp 1.8L VVT-i hybrid powertrain.

Sales of the Toyota MR-S hybrid are expected to begin in late 2010. Honda’s CR-Z hybrid will go on sale in the second-half of next year.

  • That MR2 is one hell of a snazzy car. I'd buy it if it was a hybrid.
