2008 BMW M3 Carbon Fiber Roof

According to a BMW spokesman, the automaker has teamed up with carbon fiber specialist SGL Group to produce lightweight parts for its MegaCity electric vehicle from its Project i department.  The spokesman told AutoCar that two plants will be built in Germany and North America to produce carbon fiber parts on a “large scale” for the first time.

“We will enter into a new dimension in the use of carbon-fiber reinforced plastics, both in terms of volume per car and in vehicle numbers,” the spokesman said.

The companies are reportedly investing 230 million euros ($339 million USD) in total.

The MegaCity vehicles will compete with Daimler’s Smart division with a range of fuel-efficient urban vehicles.
