2011 Chevrolet Volt

General Motors Company’s efforts to promote the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid may be working. According to Bob Lutz, vice chairman in charge of marketing, 50,000 people have registered at web sites and indicate a strong intention to buy the vehicle when it goes on sale in November 2010.

GM plans on building 10,000 units of the Chevrolet Volt in 2010. In 2011, it expect to produce 50,000 to 60,000 units. GM plans to step up Volt marketing at the 2009 LA Auto Show, report Automotive News.

Lutz said that once GM has about 200 pre-production Volts on the road, it will “pull out the heavy artillery and get Volt buzz. ”We might even do the same thing we did with the Chevrolet Equinox and have Project Driveway and have real Americans driving Volts where they use it as a daily car for a couple of months.”

GM can only do this thing for so long. Consumers will start to wonder and migrate to other brands. I won't be surprised to see Toyota coming out with one before the Volt hits the showroom.

Moreover, 'interested-in-buying' consumers do not translate to 'buying' consumers. I can honestly saying I am interested in buying one but might not buy one once I see it in person and seriously sit down can calculate the savings.

They still don't have the 200 beta Vapors on the road yet? The alleged 50,000 people showing an alleged strong intention to buy must be patient people or are just a vaporous as the Vapor itself.

I would find the 50,000 number to be much more believable if GM had $100 deposits like Penske did with the Smart introduction. Besides with GM's dismal sales trending down the last 2 months and for the foreseeable future GM can't wait another year or more for Vapor (and its announced variations on the theme) to condense into reality.

In other Vapor news, the Vapor will be a celebrity judge for American Idol for the 2011 season. GM disputed rumors that the Vapor was denied a spot as a contestant on Dancing With The Stars because there was no guarantee that the Vapor would be mobile in time for the start of next season. Robert Lutz, Vice Chairman of GM was quoted as saying that "The Vapor never considered DWTS as the Vapor's favorite show is The Biggest Loser and would rather make multiple appearances there."
