DriveSafe.ly

As Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood leads a two day summit on distracted driving, we thought this would be a good time to bring you news about new technology that is taking action to keep your attention on the road. Meet DriveSafe.ly – a new mobile application that reads text (SMS) messages and emails aloud in real time and automatically responds without drivers having to touch their mobile device.

DriveSafe.ly is currently available on all BlackBerry and Android models. An iPhone and a Windows based version are on the way.

Downloading the application for free allows you to hear 25 words per message in a female voice and has an optional text and e-mail auto responder. The $13.95 version allows you to hear up to 500 words per message and allows you to pick between a male and female voice. It also has the ability to auto-select by contact gender.

Check them out at DriveSafe.ly.

I just tried our the free version for my Blackberry Curve. It's pretty cool how it works, a text comes in and the vice says “new text message” and then reads it. After it reads it it automatically sends a text message to the person that sent it to you telling them you'll get back to them later. You can customize the message that it replies with or turn the feature off altogether if your on a plan that has a limited number of texts and you don't want to use them up with these auto replies.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work with gmail for blackberry (what I use). Granted, most of the time emails can wait till you get where you're going to be read.

It also doesn't work with Blackberry Messenger which REALLY sucks since that's how i communicate with most people.

Ultimately, this is great if you use sms texts and the blackberry email program and want your messages read to you as soon as they arrive.

You can't use it to respond to people so it's pretty much pointless in reducing the number of texting related accidents since the majority of these occur when people are typing out messages while driving.

This application is BY FAR the best mobile app I have ever downloaded!

I'm using it on my Verizon Storm.

I can't believe how realistic it sounds.

    Thanks for the tip!
