Tata says it will close a Land Rover or Jaguar factory next year

Tata Motors said today that it will close one of the three Jaguar/Land Rover assembly plants in England by 2014 in an effort to move the two brands to profitability. Tata said that it will close either a factory in Castle Bromwich, which makes Jaguars, or its plant in Solihull, which makes Land Rovers.

The company said that the two sites are under review and has yet to decided which of the two plants it will close. A decision is due to be announced in the first half of 2010.

Both Jaguar and Land Rover, which Tata bought from FoMoCo last year, have been hit hard by the global economic downturn.

Tata said that it will consolidate the two central England factories, which are 8 miles apart, into one over the next 5 years.
