According to Automotive News, General Motors Company is looking to increase production of its new 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and is planning to assemble the crossover at a second plant.

“We are studying how fast we can add another plant for the Equinox,” Bob Lutz said at a media event today. “For the time being, we’re just doing a third shift at the CAMI plant.”

GM currently builds the Equinox and the 2010 GMC Terrain at a plant in Ontario, CAMI Automotive Inc. The third shift at CAMI will boost annual output of the Equinox and Terrain crossovers to 200,000 units.

The Detroit automaker sold 9,902 2010 Equinox models through Sept. 15. Lutz said that he expects high-volume sales for both models.
