2010 Dodge Caliber

Chrysler Group LLC said that it will add a second shift in Belvidere, Ill., to make more Dodge Calibers. Apparently the Caliber was a very popular purchase during the government’s Cash for Clunkers program and Chrysler now needs to build up drained inventory of the model.

“We are taking this action in response to increasing demand for our most fuel-efficient products,” said Michael Accavitti, CEO of the Dodge brand told Automotive News. “However, we are cautious about the continued volatility in the industry and will monitor demand in order to respond to market conditions.”

The second shift will add 850 workers at the plant, enabling Chrysler to pump out an additional 10,000 units of the Caliber this year. Production of the Jeep Compass and Patriot, which are also produced in Belvidere, will be maintained at current levels.
