The government will shut down successful (depending on how you look at it) Cash for Clunkers program later today at 8:00 p.m. (Eastern Time).

A couple of dealers said that they will be participating in the Cars Allowance Rebate System program up until the end, while some stopped participating as early as Friday. AutoNation, the country’s largest dealership chain, stopped taking Cash for Clunker transactions right before the weekend. It said that it had completed nearly 11,000 Cash for Clunkers deals.

Edmunds.com said its analysts estimate the nationwide annual sales rate for the weekend would reach about 15 million units, compared with an 11.1-million-unit rate for the month of July, reports Automotive News.

My parents tried trading in an old Windstar for a new Mazda3 sedan but the dealer was no longer participating in C.A.R.S. In fact the only dealer in town still participating was the Hyundai dealership.
