Germany plans 1 million electric-vehicles on the roads by 2020

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cabinet said today that they have agreed on a plan to get a million electric-vehicles on the roads by 2020 in efforts to make the country into the world’s top EV market.

“Our goal is to make Germany the leading market for electro-mobility,” Economy Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg told reporters.

The plan will include 500 million euros ($705.1 million USD) of funding for the construction for charging stations and programs to boost battery technology.

The plan echos President Barack Obama’s goal of getting 1 million electric-vehicles and plug-in hybrids on the U.S. roads by 2015.
