Toyota Motor Corp., a company who isn’t a fan of lithium-ion technology, has dramatically increased the storage capacity of the batteries to create more practical electric-vehicles. Toyota says that the move is a step forward to creating a more powerful battery for EVs.

According to Japan’s Nikkei newspaper, the technology will eventually allow lithium-ion batteries to store 10 times the energy when compared to current ones. It will allow a 10-fold increase in driving range.

Automotive News says that the greater storage capacity would help Toyota reduce the size, weight and cost of the battery pack.

Lithium-ion batteries, which are lighter and more powerful than nickel-metal hydride batteries, are seen as a key to mass producing electric-vehicles.
