Report: Fiat/Chrysler to build Fiat 500 in Mexico, engine in Michigan
Posted: Aug 17, 2009

According to sources that spoke with The Wall Street Journal, Chrysler Group LLC and Fiat SpA plan on building the US-spec Fiat 500 compact car at Chrysler’s plant in Mexico. Insiders familiar with the matter say that Chrysler is also looking to make a small Fiat engine for the 500 at Chrysler’s Trenton, Mich. facility.
Sources also said that the group is considering building a Fiat-derived compact car slightly larger than the 500 in the U.S. as well.
Chrysler spokesman Gualberto Ranieri declined to comment on the report.
It was recently reported that Fiat/Chrysler will build and sell four versions of the 500 minicar in the United States.
