For political figures to enjoy high-performance cars without being criticized is very difficult. When President Barack Obama ran for election last year, he dropped his HEMI powered Chrysler 300 for a Ford Escape Hybrid. Well, the mayor of Oshawa, Ontario is about to do the same if he doesn’t stop getting ridiculed for purchasing a new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS.

John Gary’s recent purchase,  a 426-hp Victory Red 2010 Camaro SS with white stripes, has gotten local critics ”screaming mad” .

“Our mayor is flaunting this gas-guzzling vehicle all around town,” complains constituent Bill Steele. “Our taxes are the highest in the GTA by far, and I don”t like that I”m paying for part of a sports car that gets 17 miles to the gallon.”

What are your thoughts on this? Should political figures be allowed to have a high-performance sports car or should they all just roll around in a Toyota Prius hybrids?

Have your say in the comments section after the jump.

Did he buy it with his salary, then who cares?

  • Dustin

God damnit, the Camaro gets exceptional fuel economy for a muscle car, even if its an SS, My uncle owns the top of the line one and spent only $14 on a near 130 km trip. Those critics just don't want him to have a nicer car then them.

  • zermatt

It was purchased by the city, but that shouldn't matter. The purchase shows support for the largest employer in the area. The taxpayer that is complaining is very short sighted.

  • northernspirit

damn it …. Oshawa, Ontario is in CANADA – so say so you navel gazers. Who cares what he buys, Oshawa is not in the US and he can buy anything he wants. Besides last time I heard ALL the Camaros are built in the land of the Good Guys: Canada ! Home of high quality manufacturing, and national healthcare. :)

  • northernspirit

PS: why did the Canadian government bail out GM-Canada if it wasn't to save a MAJOR employer in Oshawa. The people who complain are hypocrites and traitors to their community. Funny they were not complaining about the MPG of GM car models before. Losers.

  • 2010ss

If I were John Gary my comment to local critics would be,” look, if you don't bust my chops about my Camaro' I won't say anything about you looking at kiddie porn.”

  • DNJ

This mayor is a car guy who happens to own a couple of Corvairs. He used to come out and participate in autocross & lapping days. The Camaro's are only built in Oshawa so he is supporting GM in his own home town.

  • doug

    who cares!

  • Dustin

We care. He's being criticized for driving a car that the critics call a gas guzzler when its not, depending on how you drive, you can drive nearly 130 km for $14 in a Camaro SS

  • emma

PC running amok! i think the Mayor should keep his Camaro SS and go out and buy a dead-trap Smart to please the sissy Steele. BTW, what does Bill Steele drive!?

  • johnson

Debadge the SS and he'd gain 10mpg. Oh if he really wanted to please the tree-hugging comrade Steele, the Mayor can add a 'hybrid' badge to his Camaro. LOL.

It's not about a red gas guzzling sports car…it's about image. We like to think of our politicians as a little conservative rather than rash…as mature deliberate leaders for our city's business…not as middle age late blooming teens tooling around at taxpayer expense. But with the fast, loose, and foolish wastage of taxpayer dollars on things like the Cullen Gardens Miniatures, tearing down part of city hall and council chambers without firm prices, designs, and contracts for a replacement, and discussing demolishing 80% of the city's ice pads and replacing them with facilities all in the North End, what kind of leadership can you expect from our mayor and city council? See http://www.oshawaspeaks.ca

that is so unbelievably stupid…i'll pay for the gas the camaro “guzzles” when he does a burnout in front of Mr. Steele's house

I, unfortunately, live in California where there is a Prius on every corner. These jerks drive them like sport cars at high rates of speed which has to affect the mileage. The worst thing though is having to look at these ugly pieces of crap. I will take the Camaro at whatever mileage it gets over any Toyota regardless of model. If this guy can afford the Camaro SS, then more power to him. Why are people complaining? Did the city buy the car? If so, then they do have reason to complain. A nice Malibu would have been a better choice, if the city paid for the car. Otherwise, it is none of their business what his personal vehicle choice is.

  • Poondocksaint

Camaro SS Hybrid: Burns gas and rubber at the same time! My brother's Prius, unless driven in economy mode, is slower and gets less mpg's than I do in my 09 Jetta TDI, and I can leave his POS in the dust! It seems that this day and age, people just look for something to complain about.

  • Googoo

The US needs to build cars that come with complimentary health care. THERE WE GO!

  • Derek

Hello people, he is supporting the local GM Plant buying a vehicle built right in Oshawa. Buyers of these types of cars don't drive them as their everyday vehicles so lighten up Oshawa.

  • frog2193

yes if you can have fun in yours then they should have fun too!!!

  • BirminghamGuy

Glad to see people are looking at local government and demanding change to things they disagree with. Not like that last 8 years that people just turned a blind eye to all this kind of stuff.

  • windsorcarguy

Way to go. It's a nice car and if he bought it with his own money…more power to him for supporting GM and his local plant. Props and the tree huggers can go cry because nobody is listening.

  • billofoshawa

He bought it with TAXPAYERS MONEY. He does not have ONE CENT of his own money invested in the car.

  • billofoshawa

Can't read ? its about TAXPAYER waste, and the fact JOHN GRAY has not spent ANY of his OWN money on his community, just a FREE PASS. Put his money into the car, not my tax money. Oshawa, home of one of CANADA'S HIGHEST RESIDENTIAL TAXES. Also home of ONE OF CANADA'S FAT CAT TAX WASTERS – JOHN GRAY.

  • billofoshawa

it's not a CENT of his own money, ITS ALL TAXPAYER FUNDS.

Let’s look at this logically…this is a car that was built in his city’s local GM plant. The same GM plant that was at serious risk of closing and was on really rocky ground until it got the contract to build this model of car. If he’s going to use taxpayer’s money to buy a new car, why not at least use it to buy a car that was produced in the city you’re mayor of? Frankly it would be more of a piss off to spend that hard earned tax money on an import which is a big reason why Oshawa GM has struggled.
