2009 Ford Focus

FoMoCo is cranking up output of the Ford Focus due to an increase in demand as a result of the government’s new Cars Allowance Rebate System incentive.

“Cash for clunkers, thank you,” says Anderson Robinson Jr., president of UAW Local 900, which has added weekday and Saturday overtime at Ford’s Wayne, Michigan plant, reports Automotive News.

This past Monday, Wayne plant workers began working 10-hour weekday shifts, up for the regular 8-hour shift. The plant also added overtime for Saturdays on Aug. 15, Aug. 29, Sept. 12 and Sept. 29.

The overtime will result in an additional 6,400 Focuses between now and the end of September. Sales of the compact Focus were up 44 percent in July, and the automaker ended the month with a 25-day supply of the model.

The WSJ reports that there are two Michigan Legislators that are trying to get C4C revised to allow the vouchers to apply to cars that are out of stock or are not the color the the buyer wants.

This program is never going to end.

Maybe I am missing something here, but didn't C4C burn through $1 billion in a matter of a weeks? What would make anyone think that kicking production into high gear would be a good idea?

Would anyone be surprised if C4C ran out of money before the end of August - labor day weekend at the latest? Is there anyone out there that believes that the government will toss yet more taxpayer cash into this program?

After the taxpayer money is gone I expect car sales to drop precipitously. How fast can Ford get these Focus' to the dealers?
