When a new car shopper trades in his/her clunker for a rebate from the government, dealerships have to destroy the engine of the ‘clunker’ under the Cars Allowance Rebate System. Wondering how all that works? Check out this short video that shows a Ford Ranger going through the engine-killing procedure.

this is the most ridiculous sham ever.
Let's take taxpayer dollars and bail out the car companies, then take more taxpayer dollars and give it to the people to trade in their old crappy cars to buy new cars from the companies that we just bailed out. Then we'll take even MORE taxpayer dollars to clean up the environmental impact these 500,000+ disabled cars will have.

Oh, these taxpayer dollars? We'll take them from everyone that makes over $250,000 a year, and will not gain any benefit from this program whatsoever.

Junkyard repair shops could use those parts for something.

Oh wait, that makes too much sense.

The junkyard/repair shops are furious about this because the engines are the most valuable parts out of these old “clunkers”. It's not worth it for them to buy these cars with their destroyed engines as the parts they can salvage aren't worth that much.
