Toyota announced last week that it has decided to liquidate stake in New United Motor Manufacturing Inc (NUMMI) in California, a plant that it jointly operated with General Motors.

The UAW is now urging its members to contact U.S. lawmakers in an effort to try to convince Toyota Motor Corp to keep operating its California assembly plant. An email was sent out to members, retirees and supporters yesterday asking them to call on members of Congress to ask Toyota to keep its Fremont, California operating in order to save 4,500 union jobs.

“We believe that Toyotas sold in the United States should be made in the United States. California is by far Toyota’s single biggest market for car sales in the United States,” the UAW said in its email message.

NUMMI”s fate came into question last month when GM said that it will be discontinue its 50/50 joint venture that produces the Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Corolla and the Tacoma.

Now we'll find out how hands off the government plans to be with the new GM. If they were to tell GM to get back into that relationship with Toyota at the NUMMI plant, then Toyota wouldn't have to close it. Aside from becoming a non-union shop and moving it out of California, I don't see anything that will change Toyota's mind.

Why would Toyota want to keep a plant that is spoiled by UAW workers?

With Toyota's sales being low and the cost to do business in California being so high I wouldn't expect Toyota to be interested. Hell, GM wasn't interested. Both companies want to be located in low cost areas and California is not.

Maybe Toyota could be convinced to stay if the union was dissolved and California took a hands off approach to keeping the plant, but neither of those things are going to happen.

The Fed has no jurisdiction here and should just stick to ruining GM and Chrysler.

All UAW does is cry…honestly the only reason GM and Chrysler hit rock bottom was cuz of these idiots
