I know vw and audi are in the workings of a diesel hybrid and they are testing a few in europe. Much cleaner burning, better mpg's, and more powerful than the gas hybrids.

I say bring it on. The more options the better & let the market decides who wins. I have heard many great arguments for both diesels & hybrids & I think that the America is big enough for both.

& why not a diesel hybrid?

Having owned a VW TDI now for some time, the whole thing is not all that new to me. The car gets 38-40mpg city with the AC on and I have an automatic.

Even when diesel was sky high last summer it still penciled over a comparable gas powered VW. Now that diesel is back down below gasoline where it normally is, it is just icing on the cake.

Oh, and they last twice as long too.

I might suggest the new touareg v6 clean diesel. Not quick as the v10 tdi, but still a very durable machine.
the other vw clean diesels don't take the urea injection, so one less thing to remember to change.
