2009 Pontiac G8 GXP

It’s no secret that GM will phase out the Pontiac brand in 2010 with the 2010 Pontiac Vibe being the last model from the brand. Even though the Pontiac G8 is the most loved Pontiac model after the GTO, GM’s CEO Fritz Henderson is not a fan of keeping it alive.

Fritz has said over-and-over again that the G8 will not live on as a model in one of its four-core brands. There was some hope earlier this month when GM’s vice chairman of global product development Tom Stephens, said that the Pontiac G8 may survive with another GM badge.

Well, Fritz has blatantly rejected the idea once again. In his second online-chat with media and analysts on Friday, Fritz was asked whether or not “Pontiac G8 have any kind of future within General Motors as a re-badged model.” Fritz simply replied “I am not a fan of rebadging.”

What is it going to take to convince Fritz that Americans love and want the G8 to live on? Driving a bunch of G8s to the Renaissance Center may be one option but for now – we’re guessing a poll may help out. So let us know. Would you buy a Pontiac G8 if it was rebadged as Chevrolet or Buick?

the pontiac g8 (holden commodore) is too good of a car for it not to be rebadged in the USA. i bet GM is just keeping a tight lip on it b/c they need to sell off what's left of the pontiac brand. Announcing a rebadge will just be worse for sales of the Pontiac G8. Many will just wait a couple of years when the newer version comes out especially since we're still in a recession.

Great point Lee about GMC being basically a totally re-badged brand

And I am with you too Big Z, this has a lot more to do with green politics than the quality of this car.
Our boy Fritz is telling his bosses (the government) what they want to hear about fuel efficiency to safe-gaurd his job

The Greens, the new Over Lords at GM, have decided that rear wheel drive does not make for a green automobile. The G8 and their ilk are to be banished from the GM showroom and not to be made an option for the clueless American consumer.

The Greens know what is best for us and we better be happy about it. There are CAFE goals to be met here and social re-engineering to be done.

So be sure to put on the happy face when they tell us that the new Corvette will be based on the Cruze platform.

Fritz is an idiot, and he should go the way of Pontiac if he doesn't think it's worthwhile continuing the G8 under another brand.

Otherwise i fully expect the coming announcement that GMC will be discontinued as well if he really isn't a fan of badge engineering.
