According to 1Addicts forum member SCOTT26, BMW has some big plans for the next-generation BMW 1-series. The backbone of the whole plan is a new modular chassis that will spin-off a bunch of variants including a hybrid, SUV, a GranTurismo model (much like the 5-Series GT) and more.

“BMW will spearhead the first premium line up in the compact segment to offer a hybrid drivetrain for each variant” in the 1-Series lineup, says Scott. Part two will include a bunch of fuel-saving technologies from BMW’s EfficientDynamics programs.

Scott points out three different portfolios in BMW’s top-secret filing cabinet. The “Traditional Portfolio” includes the regular 1-Series, a 1-Series ActiveHybrid and a 1-Series Sporthatch. The “Sporting Portfolio” includes a 1-Series Coupe, a 1-Series Cabriolet, a 1-Series SuperSports and the much talked about Z2. Finally, the “Lifestyle Portfolio” will include the X1, X2, a 1-Series GranTurismo and a Y1 (talk about X and Y chromosomes).

Scott also points out something called the “BMW 135i Lightweight Performance Concept.” Think of it as the BMW M3 CSL for the 1-Series lineup. It is expected to be modified with lightweight materials and will be offered in 2 matte paint colors.

Of course, we’re going to have to file this under rumors for now.
