BMW X1 spy shots released by… BMW, 204-hp diesel model gets 37 mpg

While we’ve already seen an image of the upcoming BMW X1 wearing no camouflage at a photo shoot (granted the image was a little choppy and low-res), BMW has dropped four “spy shots” of the upcoming compact SUV.

So far we expect a 2009 Frankfurt Motor show debut later this year.

It has been confirmed by TimesOnline that three engine choices will be offered at launch: the 177-hp and 204-hp diesels from the 320d and 123d respectively, and a 272-hp 3.0L gasoline engine. The latter will make its way over the U.S.; however, we don’t expect BMW to offer any diesel options for the U.S. when the X1 is first launched.

Andrew Frankel of TimesOnline drove the 204-hp diesel model, which he says goes from 0 to 62 mph in 7.3 seconds while returning a fuel-economy of more than 44 mpg (that’s about 37 mpg according to U.S. standards).
