According to Ford spokeswoman Angie Kozleski, the last unit of the Mercury Sable will roll off the production line this Thursday. Ford sold only 1,158 Sables last month.

The move will leave Mercury with just four models. The Mercury Mountaineer and the Grand Marquis are both scheduled to die over the next couple of years.

Mercury is scheduled to get a new small car for 2010. While details are still being kept under the cover, we do know that the car will be based on a Ford platform and will be similar in size to the Focus.

Analysts say that Ford decided pass on the new Sable so it could invest more into the new 2010 Ford Taurus, which is built on the same assembly line in Chicago.

Why doesn't Ford just kill off the Mercury brand. Seems to me they are only cannibalizing their own sales. I'm sure most would agree having Ford as your primary brand and Lincoln as your luxury division would make operations much more streamlined. Same goes for GM, i.e., Chevrolet and Cadillac.
