BMW considering Volkswagen GTI rival based on Mini Crossover platform

BMW Group is considering a rival to the Volkswagen Golf GTI based on the upcoming Mini Crossover platform due to hit the market next year. The model has yet to be green-lighted but insiders say that if approved, the car will be built alongside the Mini Crossover at the Magna Steyr factory in Austria.
According to AutoCar, the Mini GTI will produce 180-hp with a John Cooper Works variant making at least 220-hp.
The Mini GTI won’t appear until 2012 and it’s too early to say how the car would be priced.
Insiders say that BMW is considering at least three new models based on the new 4m-long, 5-door Mini platform. The first of those models will be the Mini Crossover (Crossman), due early next year.
