GM monthly sales up 50% in China, Buick demand up 64%

General Motors announced today that sales in China jumped 50 percent with a monthly record of 151,084 units sold. GM said that the record monthly sales resulted through its domestic joint ventures, growing demand for Buick and Wuling portfolio.

Sales of its SAIC-GM-Wuling mini-commercial vehicle venture rose 60.6 percent. GM said it also sold a total of 18,176 Wuling Rongguang minivans and 5,545 Chevrolet Spark mini-cars.

Demand for Buick was up 63.6 percent with a total of 38,071 vehicles sold. Sales of the Buick Excelle were up by more than 120 percent to 22,078 units while the new Buick Regal accounted for 6,368 units.

The brand new Chevrolet Cruze also helped boost sales with a total of 3,739 units sold in its first month in the Chinese market.

Auto sales in China so far have outpaced those in the U.S. in 2009. If the trend continues, U.S. will lose its no.1 spot as the world’s largest auto market.

General Motors Sets New Monthly Sales Mark in China

Shanghai – General Motors and its domestic joint ventures set a new company record for monthly sales in China in April. Driven by growing demand for the Buick and Wuling portfolios, domestic sales jumped 50.0 percent on an annual basis to 151,084 units.

Shanghai GM, one of China’s leading manufacturers of passenger cars, recorded a domestic sales increase in April of 34.7 percent year on year to 55,245 vehicles. Demand for its Buick lineup rose 63.6 percent to 38,071 vehicles. Sales of the Excelle lower-medium sedan increased by more than 120 percent to 22,078 units, while sales of the new Regal upper-medium sedan – which was introduced at the end of last year – totaled 6,368 units. Among the joint venture’s Chevrolet products, the all-new Cruze compact sedan got off to a good start with 3,739 sold in its first month on the market. Sales of the Lova compact sedan, Chevrolet’s most popular model in China, totaled 8,687 units.

SAIC-GM-Wuling, GM’s mini-commercial vehicle joint venture, increased domestic sales in April by 60.6 percent on an annual basis to 95,544 units. It continued to be led by China’s best-selling vehicle, the Wuling Sunshine minivan; 50,491 were sold nationwide last month. The joint venture also sold 18,176 Wuling Rongguang high-end minivans and 5,545 Chevrolet Spark mini-cars.
