Mean nothing except as a media stunt. I am sure with the same team using a Prius or an Insight, the distance traveled WILL be many miles more since both Prius and Insight have better gov't estimated mpg than the Fusion's.

This is not entirely correct. The article 'forgets' that it also had a fully charged battery pack which they depleted. If you deduct the additional miles that they made on battery power, the resulting 'mpg' is MUCH lower.

As other posters pointed out, several German cars (which you can buy as well today) outperformed this 'adjusted-mpg' quite substantially, IMHO.

The techniques they used were detailed last week guys. Anyway, grats to Ford, first 81.5 mpg production car in the world.

However, didn't Car and Driver (or Edmunds.com, one of em) get 80mpg in a 1980 Volkswagen Diesel a few months ago? True the Fusion is the better car (at least, for what a high mileage car should be doing), but extreme MPG's have been done before.

Opel ran two diesel powered race cars in the low displacement circuit in Europe a few years ago that averaged 120mpg, and still won races doing 100mpg the whole time
