GM talking to Toyota on another shared model to replace Pontiac Vibe

GM CEO Fritz Henderson made it pretty clear that no Pontiac will be rebadged as a Chevrolet after announcing that the automaker will phase out Pontiac at the end of 2010. However, Henderson said that the Pontiac Vibe could be built well into 2010 and that GM is in negotiation with its New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. partner (NUMMI) – Toyota.

According to Pontiac spokesman Jim Hopson, GM is in talks with Toyota to produce a new model for one of the surviving brands including Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac.

Without the Pontiac Vibe, GM is left without a need for NUMMI.

"We’re negotiating to see how best to utilize that facility going forward," Hopson told Automotive News . "We’re clearly not backing away from our partnership at NUMMI. There’s no issue of us backing away from NUMMI."

    If there is no Pontiac “Vibe”, or Chevy “Vibe”, or Buick “Vibe”, or GMC “Vibe” (“rebagging “Vibe” under one of the remaining GM Brands is fine with us”), then the new GM has lost thousands and thousands of us current Pontiac Vibe owners. — Our current Pontiac Vibe (“2003 thru 2010”) will have been our last General Motors automobile that we would ever buy. — We will permanently switch to “Ford, Toyota, and Honda”. — We wanted to stay with a dependable American Automobile (“Vibe”). — Apparently it is “good buy” General Motors (“Old GM” and “New GM”, along with “Chrysler Whatever”) forever! — (6-3-09) —— Walton P.
