According to MotoringFile, BMW has “quietly approved” the much rumored Mini Speedster. The car has been on the drawing board since 2001 but had never gained much traction from the big bosses.

The Mini Speedster will have a soft fabric-top with two roll bars behind the driver and passenger. The car is said to be based on the R56 with power coming from an updated version of the 1.6L gasoline lineup currently found in the Mini range.

Is it a rumor or is it a fact? We’ll find out soon enough.
