Ford’s global mid-size car will be built on the Mondeo platform, will replace Fusion in the U.S.

According to Ford’s vice president of global product programs Joe Bakaj, Ford’s global mid-size car be built on a European platform while engineering work will be done in by its Dearborn engineering center. He said that representatives from Asia, including China, are also on the team to help develop the single mid-sized car that can be sold in multiple regions around the world.
“We’re trying to balance the workload between the engineering centers, and so the cars are going to be led out of North America but with a global team,” Bakaj told Automotive News.
The global mid-sized car will be built on the current Mondeo platform, known as the EUCD. It will replace the current Ford Fusion in North America and the Ford Mondeo in Europe.
Bakaj did not say when the car will go on sale but analysts predict the next-generation Fusion to go on sale in 2012 as a 2013 model year.
