The six-generation of the Golf GTI will go on sale in Europe later this summer followed by the North American market debut in October 2009. However, if you’re the patient kind, Volkswagen is reportedly working on an even harder and faster Golf GTI for European launch in fall 2009 (no word on a North American debut).

According to CAR, the Volkswagen Golf GTI-R will be a more powerful and lighter version of the new Golf GTI. Under the hood will be a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine making some 266-hp – similar to the 2.0 TFSI engine from the Audi S3. Along with the use of some weight-loss methods, Volkswagen will employ a four-wheel-drive system.

Sources say the car will make its debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show with sales to start in the UK in late 2009 or early 2010.
