Toyota announced today that it has developed the world’s first rear-seat center airbag that increases safety for rear-seat passengers involved in a side-on collision. The new airbag is fitted in a large rear-seat center console and will be available in Toyota models in Japan.

How does it work? When a vehicle is involved in a side-on collision the airbag deploys from the top of the console and provides a barrier between rear-passengers and the console.

Now, only if Toyota could release a better image with boring news like this.
