Bernstein Research analyst Max Warburton reported earlier today that Daimler AG may be looking to acquire Opel. Warburton said that the move would help Daimler gain expertise in the compact and subcompact market where its A-Class and Smart ForTwo cost the Daimler AG group a combined $8.97 billion in losses.

Not too long after that, Daimler AG board member Thomas Weber told Reuters that the company has no interest in buying any brands from GM.

“A takeover of Opel is not on the agenda. That also goes for Volvo or Saab,” Weber told Reuters.

Daimler's logo is pretty boring. Other than that Warburton does have a point there.

Never say never, but I have to think that Daimler and BMW are not likely to pick up any fire sale companies after their experiences with Chrysler and Rover, respectively.

This doesn't mean that either of them couldn't be tempted for the the right price.
