The new 2008 BMW 1-Series is almost a year old and BMW is already working on the next-generation model. CAR spies have picked up the next-generation prototype testing for the first time before it enters production in early 2010.

According to CAR, the next BMW 1-Series will stick with rear-wheel-drive and will offer engines ranging from a 1.3L 4-cylinder all the way up to the 3.0L turbocharged 6-cylinder 300-hp unit.

The 1.3 4-cylinder turbo will be a new edition to the range and will be found under the European 116i and 118i. There will also be a 2.0L turbocharged unit for Europe. The U.S. will probably stick with the 3.0L 6-cylinder units that are offered now. A diesel power will also come from a 2.0L 4-cylinder with one or two turbos. No word on where that will make it to the U.S.

According to CAR the 2011 BMW 1-Series lineup will consist of:

Petrol

“¢ 116i ““ 136bhp
“¢ 118i ““ 184bhp
“¢ 120i ““ 218bhp
“¢ 130i ““ 272bhp

Diesel

“¢ 118d ““ 150bhp
“¢ 120d ““ 184bhp
“¢ 123d ““ 211bhp

    Wait. I'm confused. Doesn't the 1-series already comes with a 2.0L twin-turbo diesel engine in the 123d?

The US will never take in the 2.0 diesel no matter how much it makes sense to get better gas mileage. The gas stations are harder to find, releases more CO2 than normal petrol cars and just a couple months ago, diesel prices were at least a dollar more than the cost of regular due to higher cost to produce diesel fuel.
