Checker Motors Corp. files for Chapter 11

Checker Motors Corp., the maker of Checker taxi cabs, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company sought court protection on Friday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Michigan saying that the rise of cost in raw materials and the fall in demand accounted for its problems

Checker said that it has also been unsuccessful in negotiation lower wages with the union that would make it competitive with other suppliers.

The company, now an auto parts maker, made taxi cabs more than 25 years ago. It employed 246 employees and made metal stampings and welded assemblies.
