“The horsepower war is over,” AMG boss Volker Mornhinweg told AutoCar. Mornhinweg said that AMG is now going to focus on pursuing higher fuel-economy for its future cars while trying to better performance levels. He said that AMG will do that by cutting weight, optimizing the engine and using other alternative fuel-saving technologies.

According to Mornhinweg, we’ll get to see those changes in the redesigned Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG due out later this year. He said that the new E 63 AMG will be lighter and will provide a little more “grunt” with better fuel-economy.

The boss of AMG also confirmed that the high-performance division was looking into producing compact AMG models. A AMG A-Class or B-Class in the works? We’ll find out soon enough.

While more is usually better, the level of power that AMGs now generate is substantial. Lightening AMG cars will be money well spent leading to improved performance and increased fuel efficiency.

Eventually, the efforts made to improve weight reduction will make their way into other models and benefit more people.

This could be a significant win for everyone.

    I agree with Zermatt.. lol..

However, I hope they do not become too light–cars need to be durable…

Kabluey – they won't compromise durability/safety for weight

I’m sure the $29 million they paid in fuel-efficiency fines had nothing to do with this decision?

….its good this will promote them to develop new lighter efficient technologies but it sucks that it takes government regulations to promote it =/

    just venting: specifically the previous M3, E46 inline6 3.2L 343bhp.

VW (audi) & MercBenzo couldn't touch it! so what next? they increased displacement & cyl count. only then (w/in comparo magz) would their RS-whatever & AMG-blah-blah would eclipse the bimmer 6 shooter.

bmw had no choice but to go the v8 route.

hilarious: HP war on PRODUCTION cars???? if you want REAL racing & true driver control, ….go (& master) karting. otherwise, driving over 100mph on PUBLIC roads is for posers/pretenders.
