According to a report by the Financial Times, Lotus is planning to build a battery-powered performance car. The car will be like the Chevrolet Volt and will be equipped with a fuel-based “range extender” to back up the battery. A concept is expected to make a debut at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show in March.

The report says that the car will achieve 300 to 400 miles on a single tank of gas.

“Don’t be surprised to see an electric Lotus shortly. We are working on the technologies that will go behind it,” Michael Kimberley, chief executive, told Financial Times.

Lotus currently provides the bodies for the Tesla Roadster which is based on the Lotus Elise. It it also working with Chrysler on the Dodge EV.

    They should really stop referring to the range of these electric cars as "tank of gas." Single charge seems a bit more fit.
