Ford’s commercial electric-van will be based on the Transit Connect

FoMoCo’s CEO Alan Mulally said that the company’s new electric-van will be based on the European-developed Transit model. The commercial electric-van is a part of Ford’s turnaround plan submitted to Congress earlier this month.

Mulally told reporters today at the company’s product-development center that the commercial van will be made available to the market in 2010. Insiders told Automotive News that the van will be version of the Transit Connect, the smallest model of the Transit lineup.

A gasoline Transit Connect is scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. next summer. Ford will reveal more details about the electric Transit connect at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show next month.
