In an effort to trim nameplates within the next three years, GM is reconsidering plans to launch the 2010 G8 Sport Truck that is set to make its debut late next year. Plans to launch the front-wheel-drive 2010 Pontiac G3 are still on schedule for next spring.

“We are having lots of discussions,” Susan Docherty, vice president of Buick-Pontiac-GMC, told Automotive News. “We would be foolish if we didn’t take a second look at whether or not that is the right thing to do.”

The Pontiac G8 ST was created by GM’s Holden subsidiary in Australia. Developed on the G8 platform, GM projected sales of about 5,000 units annually. The 2010 Pontiac G3 will carry a sticker price of less than $15,000

I will be disappointed if Pontiac will not introduce the G8 Sport Truck. This is one GM vehicle I wanted and planned to order one for a fun car.

I can understand if GM needs to cut back to cars that are more core to the majority of their buyers, but as a German car owner the G8 Sport truck would have been a conquest for GM.

    Too bad.

Is product planning the problem for GM? Have they mostly gotten themselves into this position due to a VERY poor understanding of how they serve their markets and how they can really build brand equity? If the average American (not sure what that is) would GM be able to peddle the by and large crap product out to the masses?

Lutz is supposed to be a product guy, GM is on the ropes, there ARE examples globally of car companies large and small whose fortunes have been turned around through strategic thinking including cutting the crap product and building what people want (Porsche, Nissan).

Come on gringoes, Not Invented Here Syndrome was surely in decline at the turn of the century and died died earlier this year.
