Range has to be more than miles traveled.

A few years back while in LA, I rented a GM Impact from Budget. I was in traffic on on the 405 heading to Long Beach in 90 degree heat when the reality of what it means to drive an EV hit me - If the battery drains too much from sitting in traffic running the AC I could not just pull of the expressway to "recharge".

By the time that I reached my meeting in Long Beach I hade only 20% battery capacity left and I still had to get to my hotel. I was never more nervous about control of my destiny than I was in the EV.

If your commute doesn't encounter much traffic, an EV is the way to go. Driving an EV on the 405 to get to work would not inspire confidence and you better have a back up plan.

There are a lot of really interesting and advanced EVs that will be hitting the market soon. They are going to be fast, futuristic and sophisticated; they wll also be different from existing EVs in that they will have a longer range.
