Better Place announces plan for Bay Area electric-car charging infrastructure

What better time to make an announcement such as this then during the week of the 2008 LA Auto Show. A Palo Alto based start-up company known as Better Place has announced a $1 billion plan to make the Bay Area more electric-car friendly.

The $1 billion plan will add service station in all three major Bay Area cities where electric-cars can recharge or swap out their dead batteries for fresh ones. Headed by high-tech executive Shai Agassi, Better Place plans to install about 250,000 charging station, 200 battery-exchange stations, and a control center for Bay Area electric car drivers.

Better Place says that the infrastructure should be up and running by 2012. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said that his city will use tax breaks to promote the purchases of electric cars and will also speed up development to get charging stations installed in businesses and homes.
