Whoever wrote this article sucks. Brakes can only do so much. Most of the times the brakes over power the amount of friction between the ground surface and the tire, which is why most cars have ABS these days.

Also, that was an offset crash and front airbags only deploy during a front impact. Cars are designed not to deploy front airbags during a offset crash because it can cause more harm than good. For example. Side impact where glass shatters near the occupants face. If the front airbags go off it can send broken glass to the occupants face at speeds of up to 100 mph with the force of Mike Tyson's punch.

Also, if you look at the actual structure, the occupant space still retains a somewhat of its structure. The front crumples to absorbe impact, lowering the impulse force to a minimum. As you can see by that picture, the occupant space remains intact which means the design of the impact structure is working.

I could have wrote a better article. Whoever did this article seems bias and scared of the koreans making a decent car. I've driven a few in my field of work and these cars are pretty decent quality for the price. Korean automakers are slowly stepping onto Multi National Soil. Americans do your homework.

Your reason doesn't seem to make sense. Typically a well built car should have 2 or even 3 impact sensors in the front. At the magnitude of that crash, it would have easily triggered the airbag to deploy (even if there is only one as u suggest). Also the whole front end of the car is gone..where do u think the sensor(s) would be?. The airbag cover on the steering wheel (among other components to it ) did break loose a bit.

I think it would be wise to hold off ur orders for the gensis until crash tests are done at the national scale.

Hey, let's not just blame Hyundai here too much. To back it up, there are plenty of exotic cars crashed all the time in the hands of inexperienced drivers. Although it seems like the air bags should have deployed, it seems to absorb the crash really well on the other hand. Notice how the front end is almost gone but the cabin is still pretty solid?
And at least now, Hyundai is actually able to "encourage" the drivers to "experiment" with their cars' performances (although this one here is a negative example).

& yet people defend the 'new' Hyundai until they are blue in the face.
If the air bags don't work in their flagship, imagine what else they've done wrong in cheaper cars.

As I konw, the driver was seriously injured but he's still alive. I guess the reason why the air bag was not deployed is because it hit with just the left side of the bumper at the first impact, not with the whole part.

john.. i would say so as there's no blood in the cabin. did anyone notice anything strange about the steering wheel? i am pretty sure there is a lipstick mark below left of the hyundia badge!
