By saying the US auto industry is mediocre is being complementary.

If GM was serious about their own survival we would see the top execs announcing that they are going to take substantial pay cuts and not take a bonus until the company returned to profitability. The UAW doesn’t seem to concerned and has even said that they have already conceded all they will.

GM must be counting on being beholden to the Democrats (and ultimately the tax payer). I can hear Pelosi telling Wagoner to get down on his knees now. What will be the price that will come from taking this money from the Democrats? Will it be the UAW that ultimately wins in this game and what will the tax payer get in return?

Focked!

sure, its about jobs, but it is also about competence. Wasting money on bailing out mediocrity is simply draining economic power that should be used to fund LEADING technologies and industries. The only brand worth even noticing is Cadillac and even Cady is not competitive enough with foreign brands (not considering pure nationalistic buying - which in my opinion is what is driving the downslide of American Auto industry by subsidizing mediocrity and preventing the big 3 from seeing reality). When people buuy the best product it motivates the lagging competitors to improve their product and better compete (or get out of the market). If, in the case of American brands, people buy them solely because they are American and not because they are the best product available, then you are simply elongating the inevitable because you will not motivate American automakers to compete if they already have your loyalty. Eventually, this catches up with reality and you get ... today's reality. American Auto Industry near collapse.
