“The target was to have a six-cylinder because that is the criteria of the 911 and the Boxster. But there is still the option to reduce the number of cylinders.” Those were the words of Thomas Krickelberg, Porsche’s head of powertrains, about 2 months ago.

Well it seems like that option is soon to become a reality. If AutoCar is to be believed, insiders at Stuttgart are saying that the next-generation Porsche Boxster will have a 4-cylinder engine. While details are still being kept under the wraps, the entry-level Boxster is said to be “the most economical Porsche ever.”

Power may come from a 2.4L 4-cylinder turbocharged unit that produces just over 200-hp. The next Boxster is expected to be lighter than the current model. A 2011 debut date is rumored.

"just over 200hp" doesnt seem like enough unless they cut the weight down a lot. The turbocharged 4 cyl will be compared agains evos and wrx sti's, and it would be a shame for those cars to beat out the porsche in performace . . . or maybe their going for the mpg's?
