According to a senior company official that spoke with AutoCar, BMW is planning “a breakthrough green supercar” by the end of 2012. Now we’re not sure if this different from the production CS Concept that we’ve been hearing about but the car is said to rival the Audi R8 and upcoming Mercedes-Benz Gullwing SLC.

BMW’s Efficient Dynamics division will enable fuel-saving technology with direct-injection, brake energy regeneration and stop-start. Insiders say the car is a “puristic two-seater that draws on all the latest BMW technology and lightweight build processes.”

The BMW green supercar will carry supercar performance with fuel-consumption and CO2 levels that of the mid-range 5-Series. Power will come from an uprated version of the company’s 3.0L 6-cylinder twin-turbo engine. A source close to the project says that the new car will be influenced by the M1 Hommage concept.

IMO - i think bmw is the leader in automotive standards. what other automaker out there has had the same face (kidney grille, circle headlights) for decades and still look good. great moves deciding to go with smaller (efficient) turbo charged motors. lexus can only follow the leader and benz is on a clownshoe makeover that cannot even touch the style and essence in the ultimate driving machine!!!
  • all i have to say is we'll have to wait and see... with the current market conditions this may be a project that will be shelved soon.
