It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything on the next-generation NSX. So, while we wait for some crazy Nurburgring lap times on the supercar from Honda, Road&Track has dug up some info on another high-performing Honda – the next-generation Honda S2000 rumored to be called the S3000.

At first sight, the Open Study Model Concept shown at the 2008 London Motor Show made most of us think “Okay – here is what the next-generation S2000 will look like.” Then Honda disappointed us by saying the car has nothing to do with the S2000 and is a convertible version of a dedicated hybrid CR-Z sports car. Then we heard that the front-engine/front-wheel-drive OSM hints at the next-generation Civic - and the next-generation S2000 will without a doubt be rear-wheel-drive.

According to Road&Track, the OSM will offer the next S2000 some design cues. Spies have recently caught a sports car prototype that resembles the OSM testing around Honda’s R&D headquarters. According to insiders the next-generation S2000 will get a V6 – a brand new 3.0 or a 3.5L from the Acura TL. Output is expected to be close to 300-hp with a 0 to 60 mph time of under 5 seconds.

Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

I dont like the V6 idea. I hate when new models get bigger and bigger. I like to see improvements in weight reduction and incrase in efficiency and performance through innovation & R&D. Throwing in a bigger engine is like the easy way out

I agree with Bobmarley, the 4-banger engine in the 1st and 2nd gen was part of the overall appeal. Though custom wheels would go nice with the new body. If torque was even close to 300 horsepower it would be an easy sell for s2k enthusiasts. The TL's 254 tq just isn't enough HONDA! It's only fair after many years of 162 tq <- WTF?
