Yes – we know that no matter how much we beg, we won’t get the 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco GT on the stateside. On the brighter side, we will be getting the new redesigned 2010 Volkswagen Golf GTI in spring 2009.

But we’re still wondering (and we’re sure someone at Volkswagen is probably thinking this as well), if American consumers were given a choice, would they pick the the 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco GT or the 2010 Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Both are powered by the same 2.0L TSI 4-cylinder turbo producing 200-hp. Let us know by voting in the poll below – and if you have something more to say, feel free to drop in a line at the comments section after the jump.

  • Why? Why? WHy?

VW is always struggling with volume numbers in the US market so why would they NOT bring the Scirocco State side?

If it canibalizes GTI sales, so be it but there will always be a place and following for the GTI. They used to offer both and the Scirocco sold at a premium then. Both cars sold well, so why not use the same strategy?

I think that VW should bring the Scirroco GT in and keep the GTI a 4dr or just have a Jetta GLI. The Scirroco is lower, has a wider track,is slightly quicker and handles better due to it's lower center of gravity. It is built at the same factory in Portugal as the Eos and I know it does not cost any more to build then the GTI. It should be priced at 25 grand US reasonably well equipped. Add 200 grand for Sat Nav but include 18 inch wheels and 235/45 tires in the deal. The point is that it's a sports car or its supposed to be. The Golf will always be a hatchback. If you are cross shopping with a Mini or Honda Civic SI note those cars are the same height or lower then the Scirroco. Also consider the Chevy Cobalt SS and the Volvo C30.Both are more attractive then the GTI but the Scirroco has them beat in the styling dept. The Scirroco has plenty of room for a sports coupe. In fact it probably has more room in the back then a Nissan Altima Coupe and handles way bettter!
