I own a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid and we regularly clock 40 mpg in mixed city/highway driving. The EPA figures are a good way to compare between models as they are all tested the same. The EPA figures for a Smart ForTwo are 33/41.

Your Smart is also a tiny 2-seater with little or no cargo capacity - the first gen Insight was like that but got higher mpgs...

This car will be more fun than a Prius and cheaper with all the other benefits of a small 5-dr hatch hybrid.

Well it looks like a Honda Prius. Okay, it's 'bigger', I'm sure it's a nice 'city/suburban' car which will be fine for smooth roads, etc...

But where are the reasons to buy it? By the way, I'm not a big believer in the MPG figures for hybrids - without the hybrid aspect - what is the real ENGINE MPG. Yes the petro engine isn't running as much but when it is? So how are the mileage figures arrived at?

They need to target a higher mpg me thinks. Granted, the cheaper cost would offset the Prius' higher mpg but in today's market, they need #s like the original Insight.
