Volkswagen is trying to build as much as hype as they can around the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI and what better way to do it than to launch a road trip where one lucky couple managed to set a Guinness World Record.

John and Helen Taylor took their new 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI and traveled across the lower 48 states in a total of 20 days. Covering a total of 9,419 miles, the Taylors averaged 58.82 mpg breaking the previous Guinness World Record of 51.58 mpg.

EPA rates the 2009 Jetta TDI at 29/40mpg – city/highway, so we’re guessing that Volkswagen is pretty happy about the record. Taylors said that they also applied their own techniques like watching their speed and using lighter loads.

Pricing for their 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI sedan and SportWagen start at $21,990 and $23,590 respectively. Both models are eligible for a $1,300 Federal Income Tax Credit.

Hey, don't let that get out. The liberal enviromentalist will shut that down in a heart beat with some new crazy law.
