BMW working on Z2, a compact and affordable roadster

The new BMW Z4 will be making its appearance in April 2009 and is expected to be a little bigger than the current model. BMW is now said to be working on a compact and affordable roadster that could debut in late 2012 and be on the markets by spring 2013, just in time for the sun to come out.

According to AutoZeitung, BMW is working on Z2 roadster that will be based on the new 1-Series platform. Unlike the next BMW Z4, which will have a hard-top, the Z2 roadster will have a soft-top that will fold into the trunk. Under the hood BMW is planning a 120-hp 1.6L 4-cylinder engine, and two turbocharged engines ranging from 175-hp to 211-hp.

The next-generation Z4 is expected to show itself at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. The Z2 is still under review and has yet to be greenlighted by the executives.
