The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is finally here – well sort of, the production model won’t hit roads until late 2010. Either way, GM has unveiled the final production version with a couple of technical details. GM says that the Volt can do 40 miles on electric power alone on one single charge. After that the gasoline powered engine kicks in delivering ‘several hundred miles.’

Earlier this month, we also saw the Honda Insight Hybrid Concept which will debut next month at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. The production model is set to hit roads in April 2009 and is expected to average above 60 mpg. The 2010 Toyota Prius will be unveiled at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show with no major changes planned until the next-generation model rolls around (of which a concept version will be shown in Detroit). That means the 2010 Prius is still looking at a fuel-economy of somewhere around 46 mpg.

With all the info and pictures that we have now, we’re wondering which one you would buy. Vote below and drop in a comment in the comments section after the jump.

Altho the Volt looks promising, I would trust GM's new technology just yet. I would get the Honda if it indeed is below $20k & gets over 60mpg … add Honda's legendary reliability and you cannot go wrong.

Volt – I would love to purchase the Volt if it delivers all that is promised (40 EV miles in real word driving) but recently GM has hinted the price may approach $40k.

Prius – The 2009 Prius is getting a little long in the tooth and if I were set on a Prius I would wait for the third generation model arriving in 2010.

Insight – If I had to purchase one of these 3 in 2009 the Insight would probably get my garage space. Honda has reported the starting MSRP will be below $19k and with average MPG around 60 it would take alot of free EV miles in the Volt to make up the almost $20,000 difference.

Also, one must strongly consider reliability. Both the Prius and Insight have proven technology and years of real world development where the Volt has only the EV1 to look back on.

My vote would go to the Insight.

How about none of the above?

I would go with the insight. But who knows?..by the time the volt is available it will probably have a newer insight, prius, chysler EV, Nissan EV etc.. to compete with!!!

Volt – Questionable reliability, High Cost $40k, Not available till almost 2010, good 40mile elec. range, not sure about mpg's after 40mile range is used.

Prius – Reliable, much cheaper than $40k, Old model, Rather wait for new 2010 model.

Insight – Reliable, under $19k, 60mpg's, available in early 09,

As bland as the Prius may be, it has proven to be impeccably reliable, dependable and durable in everyday motoring and commonly renouned for travelling in-excess of 300 000km with little or no attention bar regular servicing.

That said, while GM beats it chest load about it advancements in hybrid technology … inreality – they have achieved very little not to mention there is a current recall in place for many GM hybrid vehicles because of leaking batteries which renders the hybrid system unservicable leaving the regular petrol motor operational only.

Truth be told … hybrids from Toyota, Lexus and Honda don't come anymore proven and have achieved remarkable results while others like GM have done very little but beat thier own chests.

Also … the Prius was ranked No.1 in the 2008 UK JD Powers Quality / Customer Satisfaction Survey fending of over 100 other models by scoring an impressive 901 / 1000 pts.

I believe the Next Generation Prius which will be more powerful yet more efficent and is due for release in 2009 to replace the now aging current model.
